DVD Drive not working

Can anyone please help me - I have been at this for ages and getting frustrated.

I am unable to play DVDs but can play CDs and record onto blank CDs.

When I insert a DVD I get the following message:
"Windows Media Player is currently unable to play DVD video. Try decreasing the number of colors displayed on your monitor or decreasing the screen resolution. For additional solutions, click More Information to access the DVD Troubleshooter."
I accessed the troubleshooter and have tried all suggestions but to no avail.
Error ID = 0xC00D116A, Condition ID = 0x00000000.

Yesterday I was also getting a message something like "unable to Read UDF Attributes" when I put a DVD in the Drive, but not getting it today!!

In 'My Computer' when I click on "DVD-RAM Drive (D)" I get the message "Please insert a disc into Drive D" even though there is one there already!

When I try to copy photos to a blank CD, I get the following error message: "D:\ is not accessible. Incorrect Function"

Yesterday I searched various sites and purchased "Paretologic FileCure" which I was lead to believe would fix the problem but did not. Changed WMP 11 to WMP 7.
Downloaded from various sites:
DIVX Plus
ffdshow
7-zip and Windows media XP Video Decoder Checkup Utility.
(Not sure what all these do or are for but various sites recommended them!)

I don't know if this is relevant or not mur recently I have been getting a message on my PC whenever I turn it on.
A black screen opens with the blue header:
16 bit MS-DOS Subststem.
And then in a separate box
"C:\PROGRA-\infoaxe\updater.exe
The NTVDM has envounteres an illegal instruction.
CS:0669 IP :0116 OP:63 68 65 20 54
Choose 'Close' to terminate the application"

If anyone out there has any ideas I would be extremely grateful

Thanks

"Paretologic FileCure" Scam program - you wasted your money

Just put:
Paretologic scam
into google and have a box of tissues ready for when you cry.
