DVD Drive not installing

  boon_intheuk 22:21 01 Apr 2011

Hi guys, I have acquired an old packard bell easynote k5305 running XP, the DVD drive would not read DVD's so I have purchased a second user DVD drive NEC ND-6650A and swapped the drives over (they are not the same make/model) but are obviously the same size and are IDE, on startup the laptop finds the drive but says it cannot find the right software to install it, I thought it would be a generic driver? So I found the firmware for the drive but when I try to run it it tells me that "Target NEC ND-6650A is not found correctly" After searching the web for this problem I found this advice:
Your computer is showing the Error 39 for your CD Drive. This can sometimes be caused by Updates, and other things. To fix this I would like you to:
Click Start
Click Run
Type in " regedit" and click Ok
When in the registry editor I would like you to navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SYSTEM \ CurrentControlSet \ Control \ Class \ {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
In this folder I would like you to delete the Upperfilter and Lowerfilter values.

Unfortunately there are no "filters" listed for me to delete?
So I don't know if it's a hardware problem or software. Anyone have any idea's on this one? Thanks.

No CD/DVD or CD-ROM access is missing error Code 19, Code 31, Code 32, Code 39, or Code 41
Try this if the optical drives are not appearing in My Computer or Device Manager.
(This is sometimes caused by the removal of Roxio or other writing software.)

Download XP_CD-DVD-Fix.zip and save this file to your hard drive. Navigate to where you saved it and double click the file to extract the contents. Locate the EXE file you extracted and double click it. A confirmation dialog will appear when the script is done. You may need to reboot for the change to take effect.
This utility is only intended for Windows® XP, but also appears to work for Vista and Windows 7.
You may need Administrator level access to use this utility. If you do not have Administrator level access, the program will say it is finished, but will not have made any changes.

or manual fix
Run regedit and navigate to registry key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\ {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}.
Highlight it and in the right pane, find the Upperfilters and Lowerfilters values.
Highlight each one in turn, right click and delete them.
Close regedit and restart the computer.
If in doubt make a restore point before making changes.

Hi, thanks for that, however, your first suggestion has no effect, your second cannot find a dvd drive in the system at all, your third has no effect and as I mentioned in my first post there are no upper or lower filter entries in the specified area of the registry to delete?!
I do not understand why the laptop can identify the dvd drive but not install it as it does not require specific drivers, it is listed in the "device manager" albeit with an "exclamation mark" on it, but not in "my computer", the original drive was already installed but will not read dvds only cds. Would doing a re-install of XP help (not a clean install)? Or any other ideas anyone?

Virtually all CDs /DVDs players and writers will use the same windows drivers.

They are in the windows\system32\drivers\ or windows\system32\DRIVERS \ folder and are:-

and in the windows\system32 folder

They can be extracted from the XP CD and placed into the correct folders

Is there a trick to extracting the files from the XP disk? Ta.

I ended up purchasing a second user dvd drive of the same original model, and it works fine, so sorted.
