dvd capacity

Can anyone explain how dvds purchased can have over 6gb of data for example 6 half hour programmes, yet the disc should only hold 4.7gb.

How do I get this amount on my dvd writer?

Capacities of DVD: click here

currently recordable DVD's can only hold upto 4.7GB, but some prerecorded DVD's you buy have 2 layers and can hold upto 8.4GB.

dual-layer recorders will be around soon, pioneer have demonstarted dual-layer recording on a DVR-106 with just a firmware update, click here
