Dual Layer/ Double Layer

I am considering replacing my exitind DVD writer with a more modern version. I noticed that some DVD writers are advertised as "dual layer" and some as "double layer". What is the difference? Would media burned on either of them play on a standard domestic DVD player?

Any help much appreciated.

So the two rival groups are playing a game of semantics. Just serves to muddy the waters further...
