Dropped Western Digital hard drive - help needed!

  mic__ 21:34 10 Jan 2008

I have got a X-PRO external hard drive enclosure with a Western Digital WD1600JS 160GB hard drive.

Recently I knocked it off the table and it fell about 0.8m, whilst still plugged in. The hard drive actually disconnected from the internal connector in the enclosure upon impact. I wasn't reading on writing to the hard drive at the time but now it won't spin up. The sound that it makes when turned on can be located here:

I have put the hdd in another computer and it made the same noises so I know it is a hard drive fault. Could freezing it help? What is the problem do you think?

Thanks for reading!

Something has physically broken internally from the sound of it.

That will make it a total writeoff.

Freezing it and/or slapping it down (try both sides) quite hard onto a flat surface with a towel on it - are unlikely to fix it, but can't make it any worse than broken!

Since it's kaput - there's no harm in taking off the cover and looking inside if you're interested.
