Drive failure - no CD/DVD drive but showing in Bio

I have Dell Inspiron 6400 laptop running Windows XP and have just restored to Factory condition as I am giving it to a friend. Only trouble is that although the CD/DVD drive is showing in bios it is not showing under my computer. Will this be a drive failure and if so is it difficult to replace?

find this in regedit
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

delete UpperFilters
delete LowerFilters

Reboot

First link did not work - no page opened. Tried the regedit and got to the end but the last file was 0000 and inside that there were no upper or lower filters - does this mean the disc itself is caput?

a link to MS click here

When you find HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} in the Left-hand pane (Highlighted) delete 2 keys in Right-hand pane. Reboot.

2. Type regedit
3. on the Cross Click HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
4. on the cross click System
5. on the cross Click CurrentControlSet
6. on the cross Click Control
7. on the cross Click Class
