I am running Windows 98. When booting up the following message appears " Floppy disk(s) Fail (40)" Press F1 to continue. Is this a hardware problem or something that can be rectified by the system.

You need to know if the floppy drive is working; otherwise it will have to be replaced.

Boot up with a startup disk in the floppy drive and see if it is recognised.

Boot up as normal and see if the floppy drive works - i.e. see if you can access it. If yes, then go into BIOS and set startup options as cd-rom first, then HDD.

From windows right click on "my computer" and then choose "properties". Somewhere there is an option to search for new floppy at startup - you can disable this to see if it helps.

Try those and see where they get you.
