Thanks for looking.

A few days a go i tried to play a dvd on my pc, nothing happened. I restarted my pc with the dvd still in the drive but still nothing. I checked in 'my computer' but drive d had just dissapeared. Since then i've tried cd's and games but nothings happening. I've checked in device manager but it states that the drive is working properly, i go through the troubleshooting anyway but it doesnt help at all. The only thing i've downloaded lately is a few updates from Microsoft, surely it cant be those causing the problem???????

Many thanks.

If you have Windows XP, have you run System Restore back to a point before the problem arose?

I tried that but drive d is still not appearing. Maybe its a loose connection? Maybe the disc drive is broken? But why would the device manager say its working ok???

Check the data cable is properly installed both ends -and tight.
Get hold a standard CD crive cleaner [A disc with a tiny brush and some fluid- all the stores sell em]
give it a whirl
If all that fail then it possible the laser is burned out- so new drive is the only remedy.
