drive copy failures

I have just tryied to copy my main drive to another hard disk using Drive Copy on this months PCA.
I have a 250Gb IDE drive in a coolermaster enclosure and have formatted the drive.
When I get to the copy bit I get a warning that Drive Copy cannot continue as the new drive being used.
I eventually got round the problem by going into Disk Management and setting the new drive as unallocated. The program seemed to work ok and took about an hour to transfer date and confirmed as successful, but from then on the system couldn`t find the new drive.Another error suggested the disk was corrupted.
I have re formatted the drive but am back to the same warning.
I can transfer data to tne new drive by dragging and dropping files but can`t make a copy of C drive.
Any suggestions please.

I use xxclone to make a bootable clone of my C: drive.
