Drag and Drop not working

Has anybody had this problem?
I am running XPpro SP2 and have recently found that the 'drag and drop' facility is malfunctioning. If I drag a file from one folder and drop it into another, the file becomes unusable. It cannot be opened by any application, moved, copied, deleted or accessed in any way. An error message "Cannot delete/copy/move filename: access is denied". "Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use". None of these events are true. I have tried a system restore to the oldest restore point to no avail and run 'sfc /scannow. All other facilities, eg. 'copy and paste' work perfectly well. Is there a solution other than reinstalling Windows?
I'd be greatful for any advice

If you have a full copy of XP try a repair install.
