Drag and Drop leaves file behind

  darrenrichie 15:01 19 Oct 2006

This is probably me being stupid, but when i drag and drop a file from one folder to another it leaves the original behind. So it copies it rather than moves it. Any help as to how to set it back to move rather than copy? I know there is a simple solution behind this but i just can't figure it!! :)

Are the folders on different drives?

i have partitions on my drive.

right click on the file, choose the move option (not the copy option) drag and drop.

i can right click and move on some files, but for example if i download a file to my desktop there is no right click - move option there. If i click send to it stills leaves the original file behind.

push down the shift key to move or control key to copy (you'll see a little cross 'x' for copy ) ;)

Sometimes you might be glad that the original is still available...:-)

thanks stuartli. That works and i guess sometimes it is handy to leave a copy behind but it has still baffled me as to how the drag and drop function has changed. i don't remember doing anything to change it. Life's little mysteries eh?

It's worth reading up on Moving Files or Folders in XP's Help and Support - might be something that you've missed i.e. can't see the wood for the trees..:-)
