DPMS off mode. Serious error!!!!

I've come across a very interesting problem with my pc. Yesterday I installed a game and played it, no problem. Today I've installed a new monitor, seems to be no problem with it, I'm on here. I went to play my game however and when the tray closed it flashed up a black screen with a little blue box and the DPMS message. Then my pc promptly turned off, turned on again and windows informs me it has recovered from a serious error!!!! It's done this twice now, so before I mess anything else up by wanting to play my game, does anyone know whats going on and what this message is for? More importantly, how do I fix it please?
Thank you in advance, Ange

Is it a compatibility problem between monitor and graphics card.

DPMS = Display Power Management Signaling
Not an expert but obviously something to do with the monitor as Grey Goo suggests.

Can you reinstall your graphics drivers or monitor or both even.
