Downloading to mobile phone

I have a Sony Erricsson mobile which, Iam told will take mp3 and wav files. I have a spoken audio clip in wav form which I have been trying to transfer from windows media player9. I bring up the disc2 phone menu which lists this item along with all my music and states that it is in wav form and the preview sounds fine. Once it is transferred to my phone however, it is showing up as mp3 form and is about double the speed making it totally unintelligible.
Am I doing something wrong or is there some way of converting the clip to mp3 form on my media player?

Not sure if windows media can convert wav to mp3

I do not use windows MP,IE, Outlook,or Express, live search, etc. try to stay away from bill crap software.

You can also try this software which will convert 99% of all audio files, will have to buy cost about £18
