Double Clicking Folder opens Search box.

If I double click a folder on the Desktop it opens a 'Search' dialogue box instead of the folder. This only seems to happen to folders I have put on the desktop. Normal applications like IE, AVG,Word, Excel etc open the way they should do. How can I get the 'Open' command to the top of the list, (it is currently lying in 4th position in the drop down list when I right click), so I just have to double click to open things? I am no expert so don't want to tamper with things like Bios or Registry unless it is something simple.
Thanks in anticipation.

Search instead of open folder

Torch instead of files appearing?

According to Microsoft, this behavior can occur when you open the Edit File Type dialog box for the Drive or File Folder registered file types.

Open a command prompt and typing the following:

regsvr32 /i shell32.dll

press enter, close command prompt.

Microsoft acknowledges that this is a problem in Knowledge Base article #321379 and offers the following fix:

1. Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).
2. Locate and then click the Default value under the following keys in the registry if this problem occurs with folders:
If this problem occurs with drives:
3. Click Modify on the Edit menu.
4. Type none in the Value data box, and then click OK.
5. Quit Registry Editor.

Thanks guys,

Techno' solution 2 was the right one. Thank you.

Fruit Bat, Yours is the same as Techno's so thank you also.

Sea Urchin, Unfortunately your solution resulted in an error message saying, 'Windows cannot find r3egsvr32/i shell..... etc. But thanks anyway for your reply.
