Domain name already taken?

How do I check if a Domain name is already being used? As you can tell by the question, I am new to Website building.

You can do a WHOIS search that will show you if a domain is registered.

If you want a domain then click here and put the domain you want in the box on the bottom of the left hand side.

click here for an example of a taken domain

click here for an example of one that is still available.

For other TLDs like .com, .org etc you can use the same process but not with Nominet.

click here will be a good place to look for .com etc.

Someone like OneandOne (click here) will let you search for a domain and show you if the one you want is taken or not.

Thanks very much. It seems TOO easy for you!!!

is simply to type the domain name into your browser's address bar (with the usual prefixes). It's a broad brush approach, and will only tell you if a domain name is being used for a website, or is for sale, but it narrows the field somewhat, and can alert you to what the competition's up to - should you be contemplating a commercial use of the name.
Otherwise use the WHOIS searches that Sir Radfordin mentioned.

Nothing is ever too easy. You know how to do it now, so it will soon be 'easy' for you.

All the best with the website building - make sure you come back to show us your work when you are done.

...and don't post any domain you are thinking of buying until you have done so just to be safe.
