I mean original Win 98 (not second edition) I think I remember reading somewhere that only
2nd edition had full support for USB?

Hi cyclingchef,

I think your right...it is only win98se.

I'm fairly sure about this because brother in law had a usb scanner that would not run on just win98. When we investigated we discovered that it needed to be win98se.

As i said before I have Win98 not Win98 SE and usb works fine. You may be getting confiused with Win95 which the earlier versions did not support USB but the later versions did.

This is lifted verbatim from a Microsoft support page

"NOTE: All versions of Microsoft Windows 98 include USB support."
