Does modem on dial-up afftect speed of internet?

Hi, recently my friend replaced his 10year old desktop which had a 300mhz processor and 128mb of ram with a £150 refurbished desktop which has a 2ghz processor and 1Gb of Ram but no modem. He has dial up internet (as he lives in the hills) and had to use the modem from the old pc to put in the new one but he claims he now has a lower speed of between 24 and 35 whereas he used to get 37. Please can anyone tell me is there such a thing as a fast modem that he can buy or are all modems basically the same and the speed is determined by the telephone line/internet supplier?
Ps- he claims he got the speeds of between 24 and 35 on a friday night, does the time of day/night make a difference?

Time of day makes a difference, with evenings in the UK being one of the slowest times.

To get a true picture, your friend needs to run speed checks 3 or 4 times a day for a week or so, but since he probably didn't do this for his old PC it wouldn't give a picture for comparison.

Thanks for that! So there is no such thing as a 'fast modem' that he can buy? A modem is a modem?

If it's a 10 year old desktop, he may well still have a 28.8 or 33.6k dial up modem...:-)

IIRC, the last serious dial up modem was a 56k V92.

He will also need to check out, in the configuration, that Tone rather than Pulse is selected and that the UK is chosen as the host country (many dial up modems came from Stateside companies and had US as the Default setting).

Some general dial up configuration settings can be found at:

Much of it will apply equally to most ISPs.

This is for XP - other versions at:
