I have just found out that the Windows Professional OS that was installed on my PC is not a genuine copy.
It has SP2 embedded and occasionaly when I get a Microsoft error and go to MS Update it tells me to install SP2 as if it does not find it.
My question is, if I buy a genuine copy of XP home edition, can I install it over the original OS and will it overwrite the files.

If you install Home Edition, then you will have to format the system as Professional is "classed" as a "newer" version of WinXP

click here to validate your installation of XP Pro to help you to decide what to do. This will tell you if you have a genuine installation or a hookey one.
