dodgy copy of win xp

my friend has a dodgy copy of windows on his laptop as kindly pointed out to him by the wga from ms. he bought it from a now defunct it shop. he has bought a new copy of windows from a pucker retailer how does he load it onto his laptop without losing his data? - his laptop is a generic so we cannot afford to uninstall as we probably will run into driver problems!

any help would be appreciated

It's not necessarily a "dodgy" copy - there have been many complaints that WGA has highlighted perfectly legitimate examples of the OS.
