DO I NEED A MODEM

I have a Virgin Broadband cable which comes directly through the wall into my Home Office. In order to set up a wireless link to enable my desktop to communicate with a laptop I think that I need the following: A Wireless USB for my desktop, a Wireless Cable Router and a modem. Is this correct?
The laptop already has wireless enabled

How does this cable terminate ? If it has a rj45 plug on it then no modem is necessary , if it terminates in something looking like a TV Ariel plug then you will need a modem .
