Do I need a modem?

I'm about to replace my computer. Don't know much about them and generally use it just for internet, for which I have a broadband connection. Thinking of buying a Dell and one of the options that they offer is with modem or without. Do I need one?

You don't need one, unless you wish to send faxes from your PC via the normal faxing route (which is dial-up).

It might pay you to get one as a "safety net" in case of broadband issues, or in case you want to take your system elsewhere and use it on a dial-up service.

An ordinary internal 56k modem is quite cheap and worth having, even if for the occasional use.

As DieSee said, you can use it to send a Fax, or as a back up if your broadband service fails.
