Kids computer, H.P. P11 300 4 yrs+ old. Display suddenly changes from 800X600 to 640X480 resolution. Sometimes shuts down suddenly, no warning, just dies and has to be restarted. Tried taking out graphics cards cleaaned contacts, checked all wires and connecters. No particular programs seem to be culprits. Any ideas?.

are the drivers installed for the graphics card?

Used HP restore to format hard drive and reinstall original o.s. and drivers.

Take a look in the device manager to see if there is an exclamation mark against any devices. Start/Settings/Control Panel/System/Device Manager if there is one next to the Graphics card then you know that is the problem.

the drivers on the original cd should work ok but are out of date now.

do you know what card it is?

No problem shows in System/device manager. Seems to be two cards one in a PCI slot linked to another in an AGP with an external cable. Advanced properties in display shows a Voodoo 2 card. Will try finding new drivers.
