Display has gone very big and will not reset

On my daughter's computer, while she was using Word, the screen changed so that everything is very big. Additionally, there are yellow vertical lines about a half centimeter apart. I have tried Settings and the results are: Screen resolution 640x 480 pixels Colour quality lowest

I tried to change the screen resolution and colour quality but, when OK to save options, nothing happens and the settings have gone back to where they were.

I tried troubleshoot in the Settings screen and got the message: Windows cannot open Help and Support because system service is not running. To fix this problem start the service named "Help and Support"

Where is this service?

I tried Advanced. It tells me that DPI setting is normal size 96Dpi

The computer was built in a shop & has no manufacturer's name. It is running XP SP3

Any ideas?

Sounds to me as though the graphics chip may be on the blink. Easiest option is to try a cheap video card, I would have thought.

Look in device manager - any exclamation marks against graics (display) driver?

try uninstalling and reinstalling or updating driver.
