Disc space for system restore

When I try to increase disc space on system restore (XP) I slide the bar over to max and then click OK. When I check again the bar has gone back to min.
This only happens on my D drive, it is OK on my C drive.
At the moment when I try a system restore I either get the message "no restore points available" or just the previous day on the calendar.
I figured that increasing the disc space would overcome this but as explained it will not allow me to do this.
Any help gratefully received.
Cheers
Tony

What if you right click on drive D/properties/Disk Cleanup/More Options tab/Clean Up- System Restore

System Restore, by default, is set to take 12 per cent of disk capacity, a figure established when hard drives were very much smaller than today's three figure examples costing £50 or even less.

The bigger the disk the smaller the percentage required to be set and the total is listed under the bar as to how much is used at any percentage point.

I have a 60GB drive with two partitions - it is set for five per cent, which proves ample.
