i installed my old HDD onto my new pc,so that my movie making efforts could have their own drive,i was wondering, is there any point in disabling it when its not being used? is it still operating when its idle?,thanks, joel.

It will still be spinning and burning some current, though not a lot. AFAIK power-saving won't turn off individual drives. What might be useful is to install it in a removable drive caddy, then you can take it out when not in use, and use it for offsite backup. A drive caddy is about £10.
