Ive just installed a game for my son called medieval lords but when he tried to run it there wsa a message saying unable to create the direct 3d device.I tried reinstalling it but that didnt help. The operating system is xp home and direct x 9 is installed.
This is an error that occurs when your pc does not meet the minimum hardware requirements for the game.
In the case of Medieval Lords this is:
Recommended Operating System: Windows XP Processor: CPU Pentium 4 2.4GHz or Athlon64 3000 Video Card: Geforce FX 5700 or Radeon 9600 or higher CD-ROM: CDRom 52x or DVD Rom 16x RAM: 512 MB RAM
Minimum Operating System: Windows 98/2000/ME/XP Processor: Pentium PIII 800 MHz Processor or AMD Athlon Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce 2™ or ATI Radeon™ 7000 or higher CD-ROM: 4X or Faster RAM: 256 MB RAM
The most common culprit these days is "onboard graphics" which often don't have hardware T&L (transform and lighting). The game can't initialise the hardware accelerated direct3D it needs to run and hence the error.
If you don't meet the minimum requirements then an upgrade is required.
If you do meet the specifications and get this message then there is a problem with your AGP or video card drivers or DirectX itself. These will need reinstalling.
