Difficulties with Internet Explorer.

My son (Windows XP SP2) is having problems with getting on to the internet. He can get on line and use MSN Messenger and also send and retrieve mail, but every time he tries to use Internet Explorer 6 it tells him that the web page cannot be displayed, no matter what address he is trying to log on to. He has uninstalled IE6 and installed IE7 but it now tells him that he has no network cards installed. This seems totally irrelevant. Has anybody any idea what is going on here?

Tell him to download Firefox and he will be able to use that till he gets IE7 fixed.

Try running C Cleaner[new version available if you want to download it]See if that helps.Tell him to try to log in using an account with administrative rights.

My son has loaded Mozilla Firefox 2 but still has the same problem. He gets a warning pop-up saying his network card is not properly installed but he doesn't use wi-fi and hasn't got a net work card fitted.
Funny thing is he gets his e-mails o.k. and can send them so his computer is obviously getting on line for those but does not seem to be able to connect to an ordinary click here web site.
Is there the possibility of a virus preventing him from hitting the web sites?
Any suggestions would be more than welcome.

How is the computer connected to the internet, is it dialup or broadband? USB Modem?

Try Device manager and make sure there is no yellow exclamation marks beside any of his devices.

I don't suppose he can do a system restore to a date before he had the problems.

Has he tried to adjust the security and privacy settings to allow cookies?

Sometimes these are set too high and pages fail to load.

Switch off the firewall briefly and try again.
