Difference java / javascript

Can someone please explain to me the difference between java and javascript.

My understanding is javascript is a client side programming language and so is java, but java is specifically used to produce applets (i.e. little applications) whereas javascript can be used in conjunction with HTML. Is that correct!?

Thanks kindly
