Dial up - repeat dialling

  Pineman100 11:27 16 Dec 2008

I have a friend who lives in the back of beyond, and who can only use the internet via the old 56K steam-powered dial-up. He uses XP, and Outlook Express for email.

When his computer is not connected to the internet, every 20 minutes or so the dial-up automatically starts. He would like this function switched off, so that it only dials up when he clicks Send/Receive (in Outlook Express) or launches Internet Explorer.

I haven't dealt with a dial-up for about six years, and I'm ashamed to say that I cannot remember how to do this! I think it's something to do with activating "Never dial connection" (isn't it?) but I can't remember where to find that option.

Can anyone help, please?

Start IE web browser. Select-Tools-Internet Options-Connection Tab

In the “Connection” screen, there are three selections:

“Never dial a connection”,

“Dial whenever a network connection is not present”

“Always dial my default connection”.

Select “Never dial a connection”.

In OE Tools/Options/Connection/Change...then Never Dial A Connection
