If I try to access Internet via the IE ICON I get Page cannot be displayed - the modem does not try to dial out and a dial up connection panel does not appear. Similarly if I try to access Outlook Express via the OE ICON I get the same problem (different error message). If I go to Dial Up Networking and connect using the Virgin connection I connect OK. After this I can successfully access Internet and Outlook Express via their ICONs. Annoying rather than disastrous but I would like to sort it.
Do you have your connection set as 'Always dial my default connection'. To check this go to 'Control Panel' then 'Internet options' then the 'connections' tab at the top.....put a dot in the above line and try again
