I need to check my USB ports and when trying to access Device Manager I receive the error 'file cannot be found' from MMC. Any idea of the best way to reinstate the file? I'm trying to access via My Computer>Properties>Hardware>Device Manager

Have you tried Control Panel > System > Hardware > Device Manager?

Two things to Try Do a System Restore, or from Run type

SFC /SCANNOW

and press enter

Try A system file scan.
Go to Start>Run> type sfc /scannow and Enter
I am assuming XP, you will need your XP CD. If you are on Vista come back it is a different method

try no,107 right hand side

Do a virus/malware scan.

Diemmess - it doesn't work via Control Panel either!

Woodchip - I'll try Scannow and report again an hour when it's finished!

try 107 first takes a minute if that doesn work then do the sfc

Raven - thanks for the tip. I've checked as per item 107 and everything seems to be in order. So it's SFC /SCANNOW'ing now and has demanded my original XP CD to copy files from.

It may not ask for CD

Well none of thaat worked. Device Manager is still AWOL. I've tried System Restore to the earliest point available and that didn't solve the problem either so I'm now restoring to the latest point.

I need access to Device Manager as I have problems with my USB ports and I want to reinstall them.

Any ideas?

(I have my laptop set to dual boot with PCLinux 2007 and when running Linux everything works correctly so it's unlikely to be a hardware problem)
