Desktop not centred on display

I have a 19in Hannspree XM New York LCD monitor that I purchased with a PC Advisor recommended Arbico PC.
This LCD monitor has two inputs, the standard VGA one and a HDMI one. I purchased a DVI female to HDMI male adapter for my current DVI cable so that I could use this DVI cable. The problem is the Desktop is displaying too wide meaning I can't see the far left or right of the Desktop. I can't access the usual image position options from the monitor's hardware buttons because when it recognises a HD connection has been used it disables them.
Does anybody know a way round to sort this?
Many Thanks.

Have you tried altering the Screens Resolution? Via right-click on Desktop to Properties>Settings.

Yes I've tried all variations of the resolutions available and it makes no difference. The resolutions change and make the icons etc bigger/smaller but the Desktop still overhangs on the left and right.
The resolution has been set back to the screen's native resolution as recommended by the instruction manual.
Anybody any other ideas.
TIA
