Currently have a hp desktop running on XP , was thinking about getting a laptop in new year on win 7,
so was wondering what is easiest way to transfer files from desktop to laptop?.
P.S please put in terms that are easy to understand as not over sure on comps.

Also is there a program to remove files as might give computer to family member and want it reasonably clean

If ever you pass on a computer to anyone ...even a family member..You should most certainly ensure any data that is sensitive... is completely removed from your hard drive .Deletion is not enough..The free disk space should be overwritten at least seven times by random data .The "File Shredder" software utility will do a good job ..get it here

Don't forget..even if your family member passes on the PC ..they too should ensure that any remaining data is "Wiped"

Transferring all your files - music, photos, documents, etc. - to the new computer is very easy.

Just copy them all to some sort of external storage device - a USB stick, DVD, external hard drive, or whatever. Then when you get your new computer, connect that external storage device to it, and copy them all on to its hard drive.

Eraser is a free file shredding program, similar to the one mentioned above by sonyboy. click here

Pineman is correct if you know what you are doing and can find all the files for your emails etc. They are well hidden so I'd suggest when you get the new laptop use the Windows Easy Transfer function that will come with Windows 7. Transfers all your settings and here

You can transfer via any of the external devices Pineman suggests or by a special easy transfer cable (USB on both ends). I think this an expense for a one-off use but cheaper than buying an external hard drive if you are not going to use it as a back-up drive (which I would recommend)
