Desktop Icons & Titles

Can anyone tell me how to keep the desktop icons in my chosen position so that if I change the resolution of the screen they stay put?
Also how do you adjust the position of the titles under the icons without losing half the title and ending up with several dots.
Finally several sites that I have visited have given me an icon on my desktop (eg Google) which has stayed for a while and then left usually after changing the resolution? Any help would be appreciated.
As you may have gathered I am in the middle of setting up my new computer to my own liking.

Icons position themselves on your desktop and may move if you change the resolution. In my experience if you place them all on the left hand side of your screen, whatever resolution you have, they will always stay in the same order but different size.
