Desktop background

I can't change my desktop background. In display properties the option to change the background is greyed out. The picture I originally had as my background appears briefly when I log on, then disappears. Any suggestions?

Could be your windows installation is corrupt. To do a repair. Insert your windows CD and cancel the installation.
Go to Start & Run. Type

sfc /scannow

and wait (Please note the space between the c & /

It should repair any errors in the windows system files without a re-installation or system restore.

When I ran sfc as you suggested, I eventually get the message "Files that are required for Windows to run properly must be copied to the DLL Cache. Insert Windows XP Home Edition DC now"

Er....What if I can't find my windows cd.... !?

Sometimes when buying a computer, the operating system will come on the disc included with the pc. SO try that. Bu if not then I am sorry to say, there is a chance you will need to buy a new one.
