, dentifying Active applications

In common with almost everyone else I have lots of applications loafing around my PC however, I never really know which ones are inactive i.e. just sitting in their folders and those that are loaded and ready to go. This is mainly due to the fact that many do not appear on the programme dialogue box, or are not identified in the Add/Remove dialogue box.

Is there a way of definitively identifying the status of all applications?

Will show you which programs are actually running. A diagnostics tool like Everest (2,423K) System Diagnostics (=Aida) will give you more detail, but it won't tell you which one's you can safely remove. You can also run msconfig from the Start, Run menu and look at the Startup Tab.
