Demise of the High Street Electronic Retailers

  Splodge 09:20 18 Feb 2007

After a long absence, I took a stroll down London's Tottenham Court Road during the week.

Many of the old electronic retailers had disappeared, replaced by coffe shops or other non-techno shops.

The ones still there were empty of customers and discounts widely available, A Sony MP3 8Gb player for £100! I try to bargain that down a bit more and, I think with perseverence, I would have managed it!

PC World was the biggest shock. Given that their web-site is hard to navigate, I would have thought there would be more staff but there are now very few on the retail and repair side!

Many of their products are sale items and nowhere did I see the latest products outside televisions.

Still, I picked up a Hauppauge WINTV-HVR-1100 for £50 to replace my WINTV 2000 so I now have 41 channels of Freeview available. And.. it is easy to set up the record function!

Alas, I think that the internet has very much caught up with the retail side and that appears to have had its day! If you have shares ... sell!
