Dell Studio 540 - finding a good PSU upgrade

  jimbob152 12:17 13 Jul 2009

I recently bought a new Dell studio 540 machine with the specs below.

Frankly, the graphics card sucks and I want to upgrade.
I've been looing at getting an ATI HD 4890 but I'm pretty sure the 350W PSU that comes with the machine just won't have the juice I need to power it. (i think i'll need about 500-550w).

I've heard fitting PSU's in pre-made's like my Dell can sometime's be a problem.

Can anyone advise on a good PSU that not only can power the new card I want but aso fits in the Dell Studio 540 minitower machine I have?

I'm not familiar with your machine - I had mine made locally after specifying what I wanted it to do - photographic work mainly. The graphics had to be very good, and they are. The tower is standard size. Some months ago my PSU packed up after some years of use. I had no difficulty in extracting it and re-installing a new 400W replacement supplied by a local computer guru for about £25. It works perfectly.
From my own experience I would think that a 400W PSU would be adequate for your new graphics card. The only problem is if Dell made it difficult to extract. If you are at all handy with nuts and bolts and electrical bits then have a go! You may find it much easier than you think. PSUs are generally of a standard design and size whatever their power and probably are for mini-towers too. Good luck!

the 12v rail needs to be strong and the card has two power connectors, ocz modxstream pro 500w £54 or a top psu, be quiet dark power pro 650w £105. the card is 241mm long.

I've been told by Dell the system I have is powered by a BTX power supply.

Are the two PSU's mentioned above going to be compatible my system?
