Xp is fussy about floppies formatted on the older windows systems.

Hav you still got the old machine? copy the disc to the harddrive on the old machine reformat it on the new dell and then copy the contents back from the old machine. Both machines should now recognise the disk

Check

1.led lit during boot up?

2. ribbon cable correct way round and fully inserted at both floppy and mother board

3. power cable fully inserted to floppy

4. floppy disK controller (FDC) enabled in BIOS

3. yes - checked and reinsterted
4. Unsure - how would i know ?

Thanks

Enter BIOS (setup)

message on first screen says something like press del to enter setup,

but could be oher keys for your machine.

Once in BIOS lokk for Advanced d screen then look for FDC floppy controller, change by using page up / down options to change are usually shown on screen.

Alot of new machines are not built with a floppy drive and so the factory default setting for the Floppy Disk Controller is set to disabled, hence you prolem.

Please tick the thread as resolved thanks.
