Dell mini 910 problems

  geordiepaul2001 11:59 11 Jan 2011

Hi all,

I have acquired a Dell mini 910 netbook which will nott boot into Windows.
Originally it would not boot and said that a .sys file was missing.
From this I felt I had to reinstall the operating system and have attempted to install from a USB.
Now it simply states - Operating system not found.
If I try to boot from the XP usb I get a get the following error.

NTLDR is missing
Press any key to restart

Any ideas guys?

System File

Missing Or Corrupt Windows\System32\Conf\System File

To fix the "windows\system32\config\system file is mising or corrupt" where
Xp wont boot:

Go to Recovery Console and type:

cd system32\config
ren system system.old
ren system.alt systemalt.old
copy c:\windows\repair\system
copy c:\windows\repair\regback\system

NTLDR Missing click here

If you have FAT32 partitions, it is much simpler than with NTFS. Just boot with a Win98 floppy and copy the NTLDR or NTDETECT.COM files from the i386 directory to the root of the C:\ drive.

Insert and boot from your Windows XP CD. At the first R=Repair option, press the R key Press the number that corresponds to the correct location for the installation of Windows you want to repair. Typically this will be #1 Enter in the administrator password when requested Enter in the following commands (X: is replaced by the actual drive letter that is assigned to the CD ROM drive) COPY X:\i386\NTLDR C\: COPY X:\i386\NTDETECT.COM C:\ Take out the CD ROM and type exit

Hi and thanks for the reply.
The only issues I have with the above are that the Dell mini 910 has no recovery option or cd drive, hence the attempt at booting via usb.
The windows repair 'press r' option simply restarts the netbook.

Remove USB drive and reboot what error message do you get?

Without USB - Operating system not found
With USB - NTLDR is missing

"I felt I had to reinstall the operating system and have attempted to install from a USB."

How far did it get with the reinstall?

It wouldn't boot at all, though the usb did boot on other laptops.
I am in the process now of trying to reinstall via an external dvd drive.
Unfortunately I encountered a problem whereby the netbook would only power up 10% of the time.
I have stripped the netbook down and found that the cable linking the power button to the motherboard has come loose.
This cable has two thin metal strips protruding from the end which connect to the power board.
I have managed to boot the netbook by holding it in place, however my attempts to keep it in place with electrical tape are failing miserably.
I presume this will need to be soldered, am I right?

Unfortunately I am unable to install Windows or Linux as neither recognises the hard disk.
The hard disk is showing in the BIOS though.
