dell laptop user environment

I have a Dell laptop running XP professional

In the last 2 days, at the windows welcome screen I get the following messages under the heading "User Environment"

"Windows cannot load the locally stored profile.Possible causes of this error include insufficient security rights or a corrupt local profile.
Detail - a I/O op initiated by the registrry failed unrecoverably"

"Windows cannot find the local profile and is logging you on with a temporary profile. Changes you make to this profile will be lost when you log off"

I do not have the windows disc as it was pre-loaded, and windows restore to a prior date ends with the message "restoration incomplete - no changes made"

Where do I go from here??
Many thanks
