Dell laptop no go?

Hi folks not a lot to go on but here goes...
My girlfriends Dell Inspiron 1150 was working fine then next time she went to use it - nothing.
Without the mains lead in it is completely dead. With the mains lead in, the power and battery lights on the front simultaneously flash rapidly but thats it. Any ideas?

Most likely needs a new battery

Have you tried powering up without the battery installed and connected to the mains ?

Thanks both.
I have removed the battery, plugged laptop into the mains then it still does the disc thing but will not switch on.

power off with power button and keep finger on button for 30 secs, may help to discharge capacitors.

Also check if power adaptor cable is tight in laptop socket and check if laptop socket is loose especialy the centre pin.

"power off with power button and keep finger on button for 30 secs"

Did that, then yellow battery light started flashing. Plugged in mains lead, just green battery light showed. Switched on, hard disk fired u,then it all went quiet and now we are back to the power and battery lights flashing.
