I have a 6 year old Dell Dimension 4550 currently with an 80GB PATA drive which is about to give up. Would like to replace it with a larger drive. Dell told me last year I couldn't use a drive more than 120GB, but I don't know if that is really the case or whether they just wanted to sell me a new computer (which he suggested!). There aren't many 120GB drives around, mostly 80GB or 160GB. Would appreciate advice as would like to try and keep this computer going for another year while I save up for a new one!
Thanks for the info. I am now trying to decide if it is worth changing my hard drive. The current hard drive is heating up all the time - it gets to 99deg within half an hour. An IT person at work says that if I change it, the same thing will probably happen again as something must be causing it. I don't want to throw good money after bad and am wondering if I should cut my losses and get a new computer (vastly more cost but would hate to lose everything). Any advice appreciated.
