Dell CD drive fails to read!

After recently sending my pc to dell for repairs it has returned and now fails to read any CD from DVD/CD drive. The computer is now out of warranty and only displays the message 'Device fails to function'. However the CD drive reads whatever cd has been stuck in but fails to show any information as to what is on it. As I cant run any updates for drivers or even reinstall my PC I need to know if any other dell users have suffered from the same fate. Any ideas?

It may be just out of warranty but twelve months is not really a fair life for a cd/dvd drive.
Have you been back in touch with dell to see if they will help in some way?

Failing this bite the bullet and buy a replacement drive they're around £30 at the moment.

PS have you tried the cd/dvd in another computer?

Control panel - system -hardwar - device manager

uninstall the CD and uninstall the IDE channel the drive is on.

Reboot XP will detect and re install

if not XP then reinstall in device manager.

If still no good the laser probably us time to fit a new DVD RW approx £30
