Deleting Shortcuts on Windows XP

Is it only on my system that it takes about 20 seconds to delete a shortcut?

Every time I install a program update, I remove the shortcuts that the installation program creates to keep my Start menu tidy, but 20 seconds is a very long time just to send a tiny file to the recycle bin.

What on earth is Windows doing? Is it saving a restore point at the same time? Is there any way to change this behaviour?

Suspect you've got a clogged up, crapped up system.

It is more like 30 seconds.

I have used WinOptimiser 2007 a few times since I got it with PC Advisor, so the registry is not too cluttered. I will try a defrag, but I suspect that it is something else causing this.

Defragmenting the hard drive seems to have made a difference. Down to about seven seconds now.
