How can I achieve this from the C:\> prompt?. Having already deleted a host of files and folders I can no longer log on to Windows 98 (which isnt a concern) and only get this prompt on startup?. My aim was to delete Windows 98 and all files from the drive. TY.

Download a Windows 98 startup disk from click here

Restart the PC with the startup floppy in the drive. When it has loaded you should see the prompt

A:\>

type

format C:

and press the Enter key.

you will need a boot disk set floppy a:\ to first bootable device boot using floppy at a prompt type

format c:\ (note space between format and C: )
you will then recieve a warning

do you wish to continue formating will erase all data from this drive
do you wish to proceeed Y/N select y formating will comence

boot disk if you need one click here

formating will delete every thing you will need a full windows disk to reinstall OS

you could also put in an xp disk having set your cd as first boot up in the bios
