deleted files eraser

Hi this has probably been covered before but how can you make sure that sensitive files that have been deleted from the Recycle Bin are unrecoverable. For example any personel details, sites surfed on the net, pics etc.
Are there any programmes which will shred the files so that they cannot be recovered ?
Thanks for any help

Thanks VoG and Belatucadrus for your help, are they suitable for a beginner to use and do they shred the files that have already been deleted from the Recycle bin

I use eraser and one of the things it does is clears freespace that includes all deleted items not already overwritten by newer files. Is it suitable for a beginner ? Yes, just don't erase anything unless you really want to, because once you have it'll take some pretty serious forensic kit to dig it out.
