Defunct System Restore

  blanco 11:58 08 Sep 2004

Although I recently installed SP2, I am not sure
that this has anything to do with my problem because
I have not tried to access System Restore for some time.

However, when downloading Media Player 10, I received the
message that System Restore was switched off and I should
switch it on before installing.

When trying to click the System Restore tab in Control/System
I received the following message:

An exception occured while trying to run

I have scanned sfc with no effect. Google gives
sites to download shell32.dll but I am not sure
whether this would do anything in this case.

I should be grateful if somebody out there could
point me in the right direction.

With CD in, Go Start then RUN type in

rundll32.exe advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection C:\Windows\Inf\sr.inf

click OK

Start, Run, Type sfc /scannow and click O.K.You may be asked for your Windows C.D.

I'm sure that your route must have been right but, after the original XP Home disk it then requested the SP2 disk which, of course, I do not yet have. So, I am not yet sure whether this will solve the problem.
In error I got the Geman version of SP2 from Microsoft and just got the report on this that the sr.inf could not be found.
Unless anyone else has any other ideas, I guess I'll have to wait until I get an English disk and try this route again.
In the meantime, I have the Drive Image back up on my second drive.
Thanks Punka but, as I said, I had already tried a sfc scannow

You can now find the sp2 cd on many PC magazines.

Having just again tried your run path when it got to searching the SP2 disk (Microsoft English this time) it continues to report that the file sr cannot be found.

When I went back and tried from the beginning again it immediately reported a failure saying that the advpack.dll could not be found.

Any more ideas?

If you have an XP disk I would do a repair of your OS it will only take a half-hour and then you can reinstall SP2.
