Defragment problem - Windows XP

  BrianColneRoad 15:28 17 Aug 2004

I have windows XP. I need to defragment my computer. I set it off doing a defragment then after it has finished it says it cannot defragment some of the files. When I ask it to analyze what it has just done it says I still need to defragment the disc. When I view the report nothing seems to have changed so I presume it cannot do a defragment. Can you help?

Try running "Defrag" in "Safemode" (Press F8 at win loading screen)The files it cannot defrag might be due to them being inuse.

Try a programme called "DISKEEPERLITE" from click here - it is the free version of the very good "DISKEEPER" programme - works very well for me.

Alternative to "safemode" is "Start/Run" and type "CMD",then into the box that appears type "Defrag C:" (minus quotes)and hit return.

Make sure that you are off-line and have no applications or other programs running - check with windows task manager.

Sorry for stateing the obvious.
