Default META tags are they needed?

In FP2002 the META tags that are created by FP2002 when making a page seem to be:

meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=windows-1252">

meta name="GENERATOR" content="Microsoft FrontPage 5.0">

meta name="ProgId" content="FrontPage.Editor.Document">

Do you need to keep these?

I know META tags are seen by search engines and you can your add own but do you have keep the ones already created by FP2002?

is the short answer - you don't need to keep these tags, but be aware that although you may remove them FrontPage will craftily put them right back again the next time you save the page. You might remember to remove them before you upload to the server, but the next time you make even the smallest alteration and save it back to the server - there they'll be again.

To be honest, the tags do no harm do they, so why not just leave them alone?

I like to be different.

But if they FP puts them back, no point in deleting them.
